Abstract
This study has been conducted to present nurses¡¯ perception over withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment, which may help nurses make an ethical decision and also may reflect public opinion for future legislation. The survey includes query for 9 items of life-sustaining treatment in two categories. One is ¡¯whether the patients themselves can make a decision on withdrawal of treatment¡¯. The other is ¡¯whether the decision can be made by agreement of family members and physicians if the patient is unable to speak or express. Nine items include cardiopulmonary resuscitation, transfusion, hemodialysis, antibiotics and sedatives, vasoactive drug, tube feeding, parenteral nutrition, ventilator and O2 inhalation. In most cases, the percentage of positive responses is higher. Analysis of differences in responses by demographic characteristics show no significant difference between the two groups of age, marital status, educational background and career. However, there are significant differences between those who have experience in care of terminally-ill patients and those who have none. In most cases, there are significant differences between respondents from the two groups of work areas.
